Songs about transgendered love and transsexual angst

Bonjour!

Today as I was reading my daily news in the french newspaper "le monde" in the section "Culture" I found this article on a singer named "Antony" who is touring in europe, and is in Paris right now.

Antony and the Johnsons, le romantisme à vif.

That's the title of the article.

I have never heard of him, but what got my attention was the name of his band "the Johnsons" so I kept on reading, then the writer quoted some of the lirics of his new CD "I am a bird now" (It’s a collection of songs about transgendered love and transsexual angst.)for the song "For today I am a boy".
"One day I'll grow up to be a beautiful woman (...)/But for today I'm a child/For today I am a boy"

I found it intriguing (puzzling) so I went to the singer's website, where i was able to sample some mp3 and definitly his voice has something reminescent of " Nina Simone" the songs are languorous which is not really my style, ( I like my music with an edge).

The album’s credits reveal guest appearances by a who’s who of androgynous singers drawn from four decades of pop — the Velvet Underground’s Lou Reed, ’80s icon Boy George, ’90s troubadour Rufus Wainwright, and Banhart, guru of today’s “freak-folk” scene. By presenting a united front, they seem to announce Antony as the next great voice in this lineage of gender-bent pop.
